MEDIA RELEASE 01/10/2023 THE RT. HON. PENNY MORDAUNT MP WINS THE LGBT+ CONSERVATIVES ‘ALLY OF THE YEAR
We are delighted to announce that the Rt. Hon Penny Mordaunt MP has won the LGBT+ Conservatives ‘Ally of the Year 2023’.
During the LGBT+ Conservatives Pride reception at Conservative Party Conference 2023, held in Manchester, the Conservative Member of Parliament for Portsmouth North yet again won the title having been the inaugural holder back in 2022.
The ‘Ally of the Year’ award has become an annual Party Conference tradition with members of the LGBT+ Conservatives voting for the politician that they think has gone above and beyond by championing LGBT+ issues and drawing greater attention to issues pertinent to the community. The Leader of the House overwhelmingly topped the ballot with over 70% percent of the popular vote which demonstrates our members’ deep gratitude for her continued service to LGBT+ people.
Having been a staunch advocate of our voluntary organisation, we have organised a plethora of campaigning and action days for the Leader of the House in her constituency of Portsmouth North where we can speak to her constituents and demonstrate what a brilliant MP she is.
She has consistently supported same-sex marriage and was particularly influential in appraising the Etherton Review which sought to repair the relationship between the government and LGBT+ veterans. This contribution ultimately led to a formal apology on behalf of the government for their mistreatment of LGBT+ servicemen and women. As a former member of the Armed Forces herself, her unique perspective has been pivotal in correcting the wrong of the past for such a brave and highly honoured group in society.
In her various roles ranging from Secretary of State for International Development and Secretary of State for Defence to her current roles as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Council, our members have recognised her tireless service to the LGBT+ community. We congratulate the Rt. Hon. Penny Mordaunt MP on her fabulous achievement and are confident that she will continue to be a beacon of light for this community.
In a statement to be sent to members later today, Chairman of the LGBT+ Conservatives Luke Robert Black congratulated the Rt. Hon. Penny Mordaunt MP on her award: "I am delighted to see the LGBT+ Conservatives so decisively vote for Penny. Penny has been a steadfast supporter of our organisation and the people that we represent. Her allyship is not virtue-signalling, vacuous, self-congratulatory or done to make herself look better - instead it is genuine and does not indulge in left-wing identarianism. Penny cares about issues that affect our organisations' members because they are issues that are important to her - be this HIV Opt-Out testing or her role in the Etherton Review. She does this without ever reducing our organisation or its members to their immutable characteristics.
