We must not tolerate persecution of homosexuals by African countries receiving our international aid says Tory Euro MP

A UK Member of the European Parliament (MEP) has this week called for countries receiving aid to be told that we expect them to change their attitudes and laws on homosexuality. Charles Tannock, who is one of three Conservative MEPs representing London in the European Parliament, highlights the fact that in some African countries, rights that we in Britain consider fundamental are often denied.

Conservative MPs lead the way on World AIDS day

Yesterday, on World AIDS Day, Conservative MPs led the way in highlighting the issues of HIV and AIDS in the House of Commons. David Cameron wore a red ribbon at Prime Minister’s Questions, but it was Iain Stewart, openly-gay MP for Milton Keynes South who kicked off by questioning the Scotland Secretary on HIV. The Minister said in response that the government would look carefully at the results of Scottish pilot projects to extend HIV testing in primary care hospitals and community centres, with a view to extending it across the whole of the UK.

Conservative MP intervenes in case of gay Nigerian

Iain Stewart, Conservative Member of Parliament for Milton Keynes South and Deputy Chairman of LGBTory, the Conservative LGBT group, yesterday intervened in the case of Hope Nwachukwu, a 33 years old gay Nigerian based in Milton Keynes who was due to be deported to Nigeria last night.  

Conservative MP calls on Foreign Secretary to Intervene in Case of Ebrahim Hamidi

Iain Stewart, Conservative MP for Milton Keynes South, has called on Foreign Secretary William Hague MP to ask the Iranian authorities to halt the execution of Ebrahim Hamidi. Last weekend’s Observer reported that the 18 year old was sentenced to death for lavat, or sodomy, on the basis of "judge's knowledge", a legal loophole that allows for subjective judicial rulings where there is no conclusive evidence. 

New Tory MP leads Pride parade in Leeds

New Conservative Member of Parliament for Pudsey in Yorkshire, Stuart Andrew, was among the guests at Leeds Pride this weekend. He spoke on the stage, highlighting the new Government’s wish to see homophobic bullying in schools tackling amongst other things.
