The Rt. Hon. Stuart Andrew MP has been appointed as the Conservative Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Stuart is one of the LGBT+ Conservatives patrons.
Featuring on Attitude Magazine’s 101 most influential LGBT+ trailblazers, The Rt. Hon. Stuart Andrew MP has continually supported our organisation and the community within his various ministerial roles ranging from Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Sport, Tourism and Civil society to Minister of State for Housing. Stuart was, until recently, the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Sport and Media.
Prior to his parliamentary career, Stuart worked with the British Heart Foundation, hospices and children's' hospices, all of which will have felt the impact of Labour's punitive raise to National Insurance contributions. Stuart has also been a trailblazer in HIV prevention and care, playing a pivotal role in the Conservative Party's legacy on ending HIV between 2010 and 2024. As such, Stuart has been warmly welcomed by leading organisations in the HIV sector, including the Terrence Higgins Trust, which welcomed his appointment stating: "Stuart led the changes to blood donations rules, advocated for investment in opt-out HIV testing and made funds available for the mpox response".
Congratulations Stuart on this huge milestone.
Responding to this announcement, our Chairman Luke Robert Black MBE said: "The Rt. Hon. Stuart Andrew MP is one of this organisations most respected, admired and loved patrons. Therefore this announcement has been met with universal support from our members, who see in Stuart a hard working, proud Tory that has delivered meaningful, material change to LGBT+ people's lives. This includes successful reforms on HIV prevention and care - working to coordinate some of the changes that many now take for granted. This includes PrEP, HIV Opt Out testing, HIV testing programmes and self-testing, to name just a few changes. Stuart has also done so without tokenising LGBT+ people, painting them as victims or indulging in virtue signalling - a real embodiment of who we are as an organisation and what we can deliver. Congratulations Stuart - this is so richly deserved".
Responding to this announcement, our Deputy Chairman Jamie Mulhall said: "I’d like to warmly congratulate Stuart Andrew on his appointment as Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. Stuart has long been a tireless advocate for public service, integrity, and common sense. As a proud member of our LGBT+ Conservative community, his promotion is not only a testament to his capability but a powerful signal of the inclusive, forward-looking team Kemi Badenoch is building. I wish him every success in this vital role".
Responding to this announcement, General Council George Wright said: "Stuart Andrew has consistently fought for better health outcomes, particularly around HIV and the LGBT community, whilst he has served in Parliament. I am so pleased to see him moving into the Shadow Health role, holding this Government to account for it's capitulation to the unions, and know that he'll make the case for a sensible conservative approach to our vital health service."
