Turkish Cypriots to repeal gay ban by Christmas

Nicosia 11 October 2013 – Two years after Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Derviş Eroğlu promised Conservative MEP Marina Yannakoudakis to repeal the north part of the island’s ban on homosexuality, the London MEP has returned to Cyprus to revive the process.

1)            What is the “anti-gay” law?In June this year Russian lawmakers voted to adopt Federal Law 135-FZ banning “propaganda about non-traditional sexual relations”to minors. This follows on from earlier similar bans at regional level in 10 Russian oblasts, including in St. Petersburg in 2012.

Prime Minister David Cameron hosts LGBT reception at 10 Downing Street for fourth time

Today, Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron hosted an LGBT reception at 10 Downing Street for the fourth year since becoming Prime Minister.  At a gathering of many prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people, including representation from LGBTory, Mr Cameron was celebrating the passing of the Marriage (same sex couples) Act.  The Prime Minister's speech at the gathering can be read in full here.

LGBT Intergroup discuss Ukraine "propaganda" law

Last week the European Parliament LGBT Intergroup met to discuss the worrying trend of “anti-propaganda laws” in Eastern Europe, mainly Russia and Ukraine. Several expert, and policy-makers took the floor.  MEPs including Marina Yannakoudakis, Conservative MEP for London, also took part.
